Directory

It’s encouraging to see how many Australians are out there helping horses and other equines. This link directory includes websites and social media pages of a range of different horse/equine welfare and rescue organisations. These groups operate in different ways, some are charitable organisations, others are non-profit but not charities, some are non-profit in the process of becoming registered charities, some are clubs and some may be businesses, or other. You can use the ACNC search page to find if an organisation is a registered charity (The search function is not perfect – recommend reading the search tips on the page – short, key word searches work better than typing in the entire organisation name)

While a lot of these organisations take in equines in unfortunate circumstances, others are groups who promote breeds of horse that are particularly “at risk” (mainly brumbies, thoroughbreds and standardbreds) and the rest are involved in working towards improved equine welfare in Australia in other ways (eg. working for improvements to animal welfare laws, public education, etc).

This page is a work in progress. If you would like to suggest a link to add (especially in SA, ACT or NT!) please email us at editor(at)australianhorserescue.com 🙂

Also keep in mind that there are rescue groups that usually just help small animals that will occasionally help horses, check out Australian Rescue & Rehoming Resource for all types of organisations, with a very handy searchable map.
